Fallout Ranking: B
I played this game roughly two decades late, but I felt it was a classic, so I did it anyway.
I’ll start with the positives. I had quite a bit of fun playing through the game. It has a unique personality and the character building system harkens back to the old days of Dungeons & Dragons. Here’s my character at endgame:

I enjoyed how there are usually several different methods of solving the quests, another aspect I feel harkens back to Dungeons & Dragons. I was surprised that I actually took some non-violent routes, since when I play these games I tend to destroy my enemies with extreme prejudice. Indeed, instead of killing the leader of the super mutants threatening my home, I instead showed him peacefully that his cause was futile and he destroyed himself.
Also, you can shoot people in the groin.
Negatively, this game hasn’t aged well. The interface is clunky, from the battle system to the way you barter for stuff in shops. I didn’t let that affect my score too much, since I can’t fault an old game for, you know, being old. Stuff I can fault the game for: having time limits and having item limits. The entire game is on a timer, so if you don’t finish in time, you automatically get a game over. Also, ammunition is difficult to come by, at least for my laser rifle – the merchant who sells the ammunition doesn’t restock his wares, to my knowledge. In fact, I don’t think anyone restocks wares in this game.
This means that I needed to conserve ammunition and not do as much in the game as I wanted to for fear of using up all my ammunition and not being able to get more. I appreciate the game’s “realism” for incorporating ammunition, but I found this feature restricted the game, and I wasn’t a fan of that.
All in all, though, I can see why this franchise has such a loyal following, and I’m glad I experienced this classic albeit almost 20 years late.
