Star Wars: Jedi Academy Ranking: C
Okay, unpopular opinion time. Just about everyone I’ve heard talk about this game has praised it highly. I just couldn’t stand my playthrough and finished it with gritted teeth – and I played on the easiest difficulty setting. I can’t imagine how rage-filled I would’ve been had I played on a normal one.
The game is full of jumping puzzles and platforming. The gimmick levels are annoying – especially that level where you pilot a speeder with clunky controls. People say the lightsabre combat is great, but you can’t even block properly in this game (the enemies, on the other hand, block just fine). The story is bare-bones and most of the game involves you doing random missions until the plot moves forward a little, followed by more random missions. And the characters…
Your character, Jaden, is at this weird place where he’s supposed to be the player’s avatar but also has his own personality. He’s sometimes good and compassionate and other times full of blind rage for some reason. If you choose the dark side path, he becomes megalomaniacal at the drop of a hat. Is this guy schizophrenic or something? And Rosh Penin is probably the most annoying secondary character ever. Jaden keeps saying “Rosh is my friend” and…really? I never considered Rosh a friend. He makes some small talk on the shuttle to the academy, sics a training droid on Jaden for no particular reason other than a one-sided rivalry, whines about being “held back,” then turns to the dark side. My feeling toward this character ranged from apathy to irritation and he’s supposed to be a big part of Jaden’s character arc? Fuck this guy. Rosh Penin? More like Rosh PENIS.
